In 2024 we’ve been talking about getting our family history research out there. Heck, we’ve spent all this time documenting our ancestor’s lives and we need to do something with this research that will perpetuate it. I mean, why dig something up only to have it buried again in 50 years, right?
The most recent family history sharing project has focused on gathering objects and photos of our ancestors and putting together a few highlights of their lives in a shadow box which can be handed down through the family in a capsule. Most heirlooms are given away when we lose a personal connection with them. The shadow box is an opportunity to gather a few items and tell a story that future generations can hear and connect to
While I have been working this project, I have had several opportunities to interview older members of my paternal family. Gathering information from people - especially our elders - takes precedence because we don’t know when that voice will be stilled. I am finding this type of research intriguing because I get a 3D image of a person or a place. By that I mean, knowing the person from the point of view of his/her mother, daughter, cousin and friend which paints a more complete picture of an ancestor.
